We've tried growing vegetables in our backyard. We haven't had great luck. When we first bought our house in East Acton the back yard was very wooded and we simply didn't get enough sun. Several years ago we had many trees taken out to install a new septic system, so we were able to create an 8x8 vegetable bed at the edge of the yard. It did "OK" but not great. The spot we had chosen got lots of morning sun, but was covered with shade by early afternoon.
Last year we created two 4x4 raised beds in the back of the yard and had better luck, but we had a late start, so the harvest of tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers was rather meager. The broccoli, beans and zucchini never managed to do much of anything.
But this year we were able to obtain a 25x33 plot at the Morrison Farm Organic Community Garden, a short walk from our house. With full sun all day long and real farm soil our hopes are high for a good harvest.
